差(chā, chà, chāi)
字形
金文“差”字的上部是一颗麦子,下面是手(“又”)。本义是“搓麦”在现代汉语中,“差”表示“不同之处”的意思时,读chā,当“差”表示“错误”、“不恰当”、“欠缺”、“不够好”的意思时,读chà;表示“被派遣做某事”时,读chāi。
On ancient Chinese bronzes, the upper part of this character is a sheaf of wheat, the lower part a hand (“又”). The original meaning is “to rub wheat.” In modern Chinese, when “差” refers to difference, it is pronounced chā; when it means wrong, inappropriate or defective, it is pronounced chà; when it means being sent to do something, it is pronounced chāi.
