When I was still sleeping on the morning of the Eve of Spring Festival, I was forced to wake up suddenly by a burst of firecrackers. The Chinese abroad do care a lot about their traditional festivals, and I’m no exception. But I’d never expected to hear people setting off firecrackers here in Thailand on this day. Moreover, to my surprise, I received a phone message from my friend in Beijing, the only greeting message I received on the Eve of Spring Festival, which seemed so valuable to a traveler in a strange land like me. I had no class to attend that day, so I stayed in the office as usual. I hadn’t realized it was Spring Festival until I saw the updated signatures of my friends on line and the festive red web pages. I chatted with my family by online video to save some money. However, there were some words I couldn’t speak out. I had no feeling for the Spring Festival since I was alone here.
There were sporadic noises of firecrackers near my school on the Eve of Spring Festival. Actually there are many Chinese living around. It would be more exciting if I went to the downtown area, but I was in no mood to go such a long way. It was not my first time to spend Spring Festival in Thailand on my own, so I was not as melancholic as before, and of course not excited, either. I chatted with my friends on the Internet. I didn’t change my phone number so I could send text messages to them. Many of them thought it might cost them a lot to receive the messages from Thailand, but actually receiving international message is free of charge, let alone I’m still using the service of China Mobile. Never mind. During Spring Festival, I didn’t want to cause any trouble to anyone. I could really understand their reaction since many of them did not lead an easy life in China.
In the evening I chatted with my friends in China again. One of them wanted to create a festive atmosphere and went to set off firecrackers at midnight. After that he made an international call to me to let me hear the hilarious noises in Beijing. I tried very hard to imagine the scenes on the other side, and was deeply moved by the lively remembrances which had come back to me. I couldn’t hold back my tears when I heard the distant firecrackers. I couldn’t help asking myself, what was motherland? What as family? And what were love and care? When we were young, we were eager to gratify our curiosity and take long journeys to far-away places. But on looking back, we would find that all our persistence and struggle could easily come to nothing. Each Spring Festival is special. Last year, with no access to the Internet, I watched American dramas the whole day. This year, thanks to the Internet, I could hear different sounds of my motherland on the other side of the phone.
In the next few days I called some special friends, who have always supported and encouraged me whenever and wherever I am. “On festival occasions one thinks of one’s dear ones far away more than ever” – our ancestors have already rendered the homesickness on festivals fully in a very literary manner. As their descendant I only hope that I could be less melancholic on that day.
